Anti-Reflective Coating

See better, photograph better, drive safer at night — the small upgrade that makes the biggest visible difference.

What Is Anti-Reflective Coating?

Anti-reflective (AR) coating is a microscopically thin, multi-layer treatment applied to both surfaces of your lenses. Each layer is tuned to cancel out reflections at different wavelengths of light. The result: virtually all light passes through your lens to your eye instead of bouncing off the surface.

What That Means in Real Life

  • Sharper, brighter vision — especially in low light, where every photon counts
  • Less glare from oncoming headlights when driving at night
  • No screen reflections bouncing back at you when working at a computer
  • Lenses look invisible in photos — no more white reflection covering your eyes in pictures
  • Less eye fatigue because your eyes aren't fighting through reflections to see the world

AR coating works on any lens type — single vision, bifocal, progressive, computer, transitions, or sunglasses.

Who Benefits Most from AR Coating?

  • Night drivers — headlight glare is dramatically reduced, making the road safer and less tiring
  • Office workers and students — screens stop reflecting at you, reducing fatigue at the end of the day
  • People with stronger prescriptions — thicker lenses produce more visible reflections; AR coating restores a clean, professional look
  • Anyone who appears on camera — Zoom calls, photos, video — AR lenses don't reflect ring lights, ceiling lights, or flash
  • Patients with light sensitivity — less stray light reaching the eye means less squinting
  • Anyone with first-time progressives or bifocals — reflections from the multi-zone lens design can cause distractions; AR coating removes them
With vs without anti-reflective coating — clear lenses on one side, glare reflections on the other

Standard AR vs Premium AR

What you get for the upgrade

Standard AR

The baseline anti-reflective treatment — cuts glare and reflections to make vision noticeably clearer.

  • Anti-reflective layer (front + back)
  • Basic scratch resistance
  • Good for everyday use

Premium AR

The full-stack treatment we recommend to most patients — cleaner, tougher, longer-lasting.

  • Multi-layer anti-reflective coating (cleaner appearance)
  • Hardened scratch-resistant top layer
  • Hydrophobic coating — water beads off, easy to clean
  • Oleophobic coating — resists fingerprints and skin oils
  • Anti-static layer — less dust attraction
  • Best warranty coverage

Best combo: Premium Blue AR — all the above PLUS built-in blue light filtering. Two upgrades, one coating.

Caring for AR-Coated Lenses

A few habits keep premium coatings looking new for years

  • Rinse before wiping — a quick rinse with warm water clears dust and grit before the cloth touches the lens. Wiping a dry lens drags those particles across the coating.
  • Use the microfiber cloth we provide — paper towels, tissues, and shirt tails contain wood fibres that scratch the coating over time.
  • Never use ammonia, alcohol, or household glass cleaner — these break down the coating layers. Use a gentle lens spray (we carry it) or just water with a drop of dish soap.
  • Store them in a case — tossing glasses face-down on a counter is the fastest way to scratch the back-surface coating.
  • Keep them out of high heat — don't leave them on a car dashboard in summer or in a sauna. Heat above 80°C can crack the coating layers.
  • Bring them in for a free cleaning — pop by Fantastic Glasses anytime and we'll clean and inspect your lenses while you wait, no charge.

Frequently Asked Questions About AR Coating

What is anti-reflective coating?

It's a microscopically thin multi-layer treatment on both lens surfaces that eliminates the reflections normally bouncing off the lens. The result is sharper vision, less glare, and lenses that look almost invisible in photos.

Is AR coating worth it?

For most patients, yes — especially night drivers, screen workers, and anyone with a stronger prescription. The improvement in vision quality and lens appearance is noticeable from day one.

Does AR coating scratch easily?

Modern Premium AR coatings include a hardened scratch-resistant layer, so they're as durable as uncoated lenses with normal care. Every coating we sell comes with a warranty — if it fails within the warranty period, we replace it.

Standard AR vs Premium AR?

Premium AR adds a hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer, an oleophobic (oil-repelling) layer, anti-static treatment, and a tougher scratch-resistant top coat. Premium lenses stay cleaner longer and last considerably longer.

What is Premium Blue AR?

Premium Blue AR is one coating that does two jobs: full Premium AR (anti-glare, scratch resistance, hydrophobic, oleophobic) PLUS a built-in blue light filter. Our most popular upgrade for screen-heavy lifestyles.

Can AR be added to sunglasses?

Yes — AR on the back surface of sunglasses eliminates the reflection of light from behind you that would otherwise show up in your peripheral vision. Polarized lenses with back-surface AR is the gold standard for driving sunglasses.

Is AR included in the 3-for-1 deal?

Standard AR is available as an add-on; Premium AR is currently 50% off as part of our half-off upgrade promotion. Add it to one, two, or all three pairs — a free eye test with the Essilor R800 is included.
