Transitions Lenses

Clear indoors, dark outdoors, automatic always — one pair that adapts to every light condition.

What Are Transitions Lenses?

Transitions lenses are photochromic lenses that automatically adjust their tint based on the light around you. Step outside and they darken within seconds to protect your eyes from UV and bright sunlight. Walk back inside and they fade to clear within minutes. The transition is smooth and continuous — you barely notice it happening.

The magic is in the photochromic molecules embedded in the lens material. When ultraviolet light hits the lens, these molecules change shape and absorb visible light, creating a tint. Remove the UV source and they relax back to their clear state. Current-generation Transitions lenses are significantly faster than previous versions — darkening in about 30 seconds and clearing within 2 to 5 minutes.

Every pair of Transitions lenses provides 100% UV protection, blocking both UVA and UVB rays even when the lens appears completely clear. This makes them a practical all-day eye health solution, not just a convenience feature.

How Transitions Lenses Adapt

Transitions lenses react to the amount and type of light hitting them. Here is what to expect in different conditions:

  • Indoors — fully clear. Fluorescent and LED office lighting does not trigger significant darkening, so they look and feel like regular glasses.
  • Overcast or shade — a light tint develops, taking the edge off bright cloud cover without feeling like sunglasses.
  • Direct sunlight — darkens to a deep, comfortable sunglass tint. Blocks glare and UV for outdoor comfort.
  • Cold weather — Transitions actually darken faster and deeper in cold temperatures, making them excellent for Alberta winters.
  • Behind a windshield — standard Transitions do not darken much because car windshields block UV. Transitions XTRActive lenses are designed to partially activate behind glass for a light driving tint.

Colour Options

Transitions are available in grey (neutral, true-colour darkening), brown (enhanced contrast, popular for outdoor activities), and graphite green (subtle, stylish). Transitions Style Mirrors add a reflective mirror finish for a bolder look.

Transitions Lenses vs Dedicated Sunglasses

One pair for convenience, or two for every situation?

When Transitions Are Enough

  • Everyday errands — running in and out of stores, picking up kids, walking the dog
  • Commuting by foot, bus, or train (not driving in bright sun)
  • Outdoor activities in variable light — hiking, gardening, golf on overcast days
  • Travel — one pair covers most situations
  • Alberta winters — Transitions excel in cold weather and darken more deeply

When You Still Need Sunglasses

  • Driving — standard Transitions do not fully darken behind windshields. Polarized prescription sunglasses are better for driving glare.
  • Water sports & fishing — polarized lenses cut surface glare from water, which Transitions do not
  • Intense glare — skiing, beach, and high-altitude conditions benefit from dedicated polarized or mirror-coated sunglasses
  • Specific sportsgolf, cycling, and fishing often call for polarized sport-specific tints

With our 3-for-1 deal, you can have everyday clear glasses, Transitions for indoor-outdoor convenience, and polarized sunglasses for driving and sports — all three for $199.

Works With Any Prescription Type

Transitions technology is not limited to one lens design. It can be applied to:

  • Single vision — the most common combination. Distance or reading correction with automatic light adaptation.
  • Bifocal — distance and reading zones with photochromic tinting. A practical, affordable option for over-40 patients.
  • Progressive — all three vision zones (far, intermediate, near) plus automatic darkening. The ultimate all-in-one lens.
  • Computer lenses — less common, but available for people who move between indoor and outdoor workspaces.

Transitions can also be combined with high-index materials for thinner lenses, anti-reflective coatings for reduced indoor glare, and blue light filtering for extra screen protection. Your optician will recommend the best combination based on your lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Transitions Lenses

What are Transitions lenses?

Transitions lenses are photochromic lenses that automatically darken when exposed to UV light outdoors and return to clear indoors. They contain special molecules that react to ultraviolet radiation, adjusting the tint in real time. Every pair provides 100% UVA and UVB protection.

How fast do Transitions lenses change?

Current-generation Transitions darken within about 30 seconds outdoors and return to clear within 2 to 5 minutes indoors. They respond faster in cold weather (great for Alberta winters) and slightly slower in extreme heat.

Do Transitions lenses work in a car?

Standard Transitions do not darken much behind a windshield because modern glass blocks UV. Transitions XTRActive lenses are designed to partially activate behind glass for a light tint. For maximum driving comfort, dedicated polarized prescription sunglasses are recommended alongside your Transitions pair.

What colours are available?

Grey (neutral, true-colour darkening), brown (enhanced contrast), and graphite green (subtle and stylish). The XTRActive and Style Mirrors ranges offer additional colours and mirror finishes.

Can I get Transitions with progressive lenses?

Yes. Transitions can be applied to any prescription type — single vision, bifocal, progressive, or computer lenses. Progressive Transitions give you clear vision at every distance indoors and darken into full multifocal sunglasses outdoors.

Do Transitions lenses replace sunglasses?

Transitions are excellent for everyday convenience and UV protection, but they are not a complete replacement for polarized sunglasses. They do not cut glare from water, roads, or snow, and standard Transitions do not fully darken behind windshields. For intense glare situations, keep a dedicated pair of polarized sunglasses.

How long do Transitions lenses last?

Transitions typically perform well for 2 to 3 years. Over time, they may not darken as deeply or fade back as quickly. Most people replace them when they update their prescription, which keeps the photochromic coating fresh.

Are Transitions included in your 3-for-1 deal?

Yes. Transitions can be added to any pair in our 3-for-1 deal starting at $199. A popular combination: clear everyday glasses, Transitions for indoor-outdoor convenience, and polarized sunglasses for driving. A free eye test is included.
