Calgary's cricket community has grown fast. Between the leagues at Elliston Park, the clubs down near Okotoks, and weekend pickup games across the city, there are a lot of players on the pitch from May through September — and most of them are squinting. At our shop, the conversation almost always starts the same way: "I just need polarized, right?" Not necessarily. The best cricket sunglasses depend on where you stand on the field.
Best Lens Tints by Position
Each position has different visual demands, and the lens tint you choose can sharpen your game or quietly work against you.
Grey — The Batter's Lens
Grey reduces brightness without shifting colour. You need to pick up the red ball against green outfield, blue sky, and brown pitch all at once. A colour-neutral grey preserves those natural contrasts so the ball doesn't disappear. Under Calgary's bright summer skies, grey handles the intensity without distorting what you see.
Amber and Brown — Built for Fielders
Amber and brown boost contrast between objects and the sky. If you've tried to track a high catch with the sun behind it, you know the ball can vanish into a wash of glare. These tints darken the sky relative to the ball, making catches far easier to judge — especially when afternoon clouds roll off the Rockies.
Green — The All-Rounder
Green sits between grey and amber: some contrast enhancement with fairly natural colour perception. If you bat and bowl, or field different positions through the day, green is a practical single-pair solution.
Polarized vs Tinted: The Question Every Cricketer Should Ask
Most players assume polarized is always better. For cricket, it's not — and we cover the details in our cricket eye protection guide. The short version:
Polarized lenses block horizontal glare — reflections bouncing off the pitch, white clothing, and pads. For fielders tracking a ball against the sky, polarization keeps it distinct and trackable, even on catches into the sun.
But bowlers and batters need those reflections. Glare off the pitch is information. Moisture shows up as a sheen. Cracks cast tiny shadows. Worn patches reveal where the ball has been landing. Slopes that affect bounce show in how light reflects unevenly across the deck. Polarization flattens all of that — you've lost the data that helps you plan your line or read the bounce.
Our rule: fielders benefit from polarization, bowlers and batters should stick with quality tinted lenses.
Brands Worth Looking At
Two brands stand out for different reasons:
- Oakley — Prizm lens technology enhances specific colours rather than just dimming everything. Unobtainium nose pads grip harder when wet — useful after a few overs in Calgary's summer heat.

Frame Features That Hold Up on the Pitch
The lens gets the attention, but the frame determines whether you actually keep them on for an entire innings:
- Wraparound fit. Blocks peripheral light and wind. Prevents the ball from catching the edge of a flat-front frame during close fielding.
- Non-slip grip. Rubberized nose pads and temple tips keep the frame locked in place when you're sweating, diving, or sprinting between wickets. If they slide down your nose on every bowling run-up, they're useless.
- Ventilation. Vented frames prevent fogging. Bowlers generate serious heat on their run-up, and without airflow, lenses fog within two overs.
- Lightweight construction. Anything over 30 grams becomes noticeable after an hour. TR90 nylon frames are the standard — flexible, light, and durable enough to survive a kit bag.
Calgary and Okotoks: Why UV Matters More Here
Southern Alberta's UV index hits 8 or 9 regularly in summer. Add the altitude — Calgary sits at 1,045 metres — and UV exposure is stronger here than at sea level. A full day in the field without proper eyewear accumulates real damage: pterygium, early cataracts, chronic dry eye. Wind matters too. Chinooks blow dust across the pitch, making a wraparound frame physical eye protection as much as optical.
